The on-track rivalry between the Ferrari and McLaren Formula 1 teams has been one of the most intense and hard fought in the history of grand prix racing. Now McLaren wants to take that battle to the streets. If surprise plans announced by McLaren Group chairman Ron Dennis today come to fruition, within five years McLaren Automotive, the division of the Group that currently builds the Mercedes-McLaren SLR, will be a stand alone company building up to 4000 high-performance sports car a year.
Centerpiece of the plan is an all-new mid-engine McLaren sports car codenamed P11. Dennis gave no detail about the car, but it is a Ferrari F430-sized coupe. The P11's design is the work of talented American Frank Stephenson, whose credits include the new Mini and the new Fiat 500, and stints at Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa Romeo. It's a handsome, relatively conventional looking coupe that appears to feature advanced aerodynamics, including a flat floor and movable rear wing.
Given F1 division McLaren Racing's long standing engineering expertise -- the team was the first to use structural carbon fiber in a grand prix car, for example -- it's reasonable to assume P11 will feature extensive use of lightweight materials and sophisticated electronic controls. While no details of the engine or transmission have been released, sources close to McLaren say the car will offer significantly higher levels of performance than either the Ferrari F430 or the Lamborghini Gallardo.
Dennis says McLaren Automotive has been working on the P11 for more than two years. More than 20 prototypes have been built and are undergoing testing. The silver-grey coupe shown briefly to assembled media at the high-tech, high-style McLaren Technology Center in Woking, England, will be the show car. Sources say the P11 may make its public debut at this year's LA Auto Show.
One detail seems clear: the P11 will not be powered by a Mercedes-Benz engine. While Mercedes parent company Daimler owns 40 percent of McLaren Group, it will ultimately have no interest in McLaren Automotive, says Dennis. McLaren is seeking $370 million in equity funding from outside investors for a 49 percent stake in the Automotive division. "We have already secured commitments to a significant percentage of that funding," said Dennis. "It is intended this whole project is run from beginning to end debt free."
P11 will be the first in a range of sports cars from McLaren, says Dennis. Though he refused to be drawn on detail, a look at how Ferrari has expanded the F430 range suggests future P11 variants will include a convertible version, and an ultra-light, track-oriented model to rival the Scuderia. The P11 will also be a global car, and the company is already talking with potential dealers in the United States. "This is not just a new car," says McLaren Automotive managing director Antony Sheriff, "but a new car company."
McLaren plans to build the P11 and its variants in a new factory in England, employing up to 800 people.

All-electric vehicles may seem like an impossible dream to most, with a price point that’s far out of reach. That may soon change, if car company ZAP gets its way. It has just announced a partnership with China Youngman Automotive Group to produce the Alias, a $30,000 electric vehicle that will be available in 2009.

ZAP believes that thanks to how fast automotive technology is advancing, it can produce such vehicle by the specified time frame. Its a difficult task as they have yet to produce a full prototype of the Alias. It does have a full specification showing what it hopes the final product will be. The three-wheeled Alias will be powered by two in-wheel 320-horsepower motors, which will be capable of taking the car from 0 to 60 in about 6 seconds. It should take go for 150 miles on one charge. A hybrid range extender is also in the works.
Getting a full vehicle within two years seems difficult, however the car manufacturer is hopeful. It has just recently made an invitation to its suppliers with hopes of getting to the affordable price range that it is looking for. Having said that, if they can bring that car at that price, well, they could own the market.

The Bugatti has a horsepower gauge on the dash, this is like an on board dyno that reports the horsepower at the wheels at any rpm. Also on the control panel is the power key that lets the vehicle obtain its maximum speed.
This power key activates on board systems that lower the vehicle by 2 inches in the front and opens undercarriage airports to actually suck the vehicle to the road using a Venture vacuum effect.
The power key on the worlds fastest car also deploys the rear wing to provide additional down force at high speeds. The wing is also dropped in the front on heavy braking to act as an air dam style brake. This very slick technology.
Now onto the automotive technology in the engine compartment. The 8.0 liter 16 cylinder engine has 4 turbo chargers that provide the neck breaking horsepower, motivating the world's fastest car.

Believe it or not this engine gets 19 mpg on the highway, which is better, then my Chevy blazer. The power gets put directly to the road using the most advanced automotive technology I have seen.
A seven-speed manual gearbox with a dual clutch system with a paddle shift control on the steering wheel. All of this automotive technology is funneled through an all wheel drive system that the automotive magazines are calling bulletproof.
The transmission also has a fully automatic mode for your trips to the grocery store or just cruising slowly on the strip. The rubber hits the road through Michelin's 14.4-inch wide tires (the widest ever made) and is custom built for Bugatti. 
These tires are of the run flat variety and are the only tires made with a speed rating to over 250 mph.
The tires are said to last around 10 thousand miles of hard driving and carry a replacement cost of around 12 thousand dollars for a set of four.
But if you can afford the worlds fastest car 12k for tires should be a walk in the park.
Yes new automotive technology in the brake department as well. Ceramic disc brakes and an unheard of eight piston caliper design stops this super car from top speed to 0 mph in under ten seconds.
The braking system uses the vehicles aerodynamics to help dissipate the heat generated by braking from such high speeds.
Speaking of cooling things down. Again new automotive technology in this vehicles engine cooling systems. This vehicle has 10 radiators working together to cool this beast down.

The plans to build out 500 units would mean an average cost of 5 million per unit, taking in to account the research and development costs. To ensure that the Jaguar XKR 175 remains stable at high speeds, a revised aerodynamic package incorporates a new front air dam, new side sills, a new rear diffuser and a larger rear spoiler providing increased balance and a reduction in lift. New 20-inch Kasuga 10-spoke alloy wheels, red brake calipers and Ultimate Black exterior paint adorn the car's exterior.
