2010 Lotus Esprit Concept Overview
2010 Lotus Esprit Concept wallpapers-stills

Esprit Concept plunks its engine in the middle of a ship, though in place of honoring the turbocharged four-cylinders that motored the originals, the concept makes do with a meaty supercharged 5.0-liter V8. That V8 will look familiar to fans of the Lexus IS-F. The two-seater will produce 620 horsepower, accelerate from 0-60 in under 3.5 seconds and then blast onward to a 205-mile-per-hour top speed. The plan is to bring the production version to market in the spring of 2013 with a price tag around $175,000.

Power for the Lotus Esprit comes from a 5.0L V8 engine making 620-hp allowing for 0-60 mph to come in less than 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 205 mph. The tech specs also include a KERS, Formula 1-style brake energy regeneration system as an option. The system will absorb and discharge electrical energy to provide an extra acceleration boost through an electric motor. Weight comes in at around 3,190 pounds.

Paris Show 2010 Highlights: Kia Pop Concept

It was snap, crackle and Pop on the Kia stand! The Korean firm unveiled its startling concept battery car that looked a few years into the future.

With its angled, pill-shaped side windows, a windscreen running to the back of the car and capsule-like cabin, the three-metre-long Pop took its influence more from industrial design than cars.

Power comes from a battery-fed motor making 50kW and 190NM of torque – and it runs too. Check back in November when we take to the streets in it.

Outside the Kia family ‘tiger’ nose is visible in the perforated front grille, but otherwise this is a car that according to Kia design chief Peter Schreyer is likely to inspire a future look, just as the Kia Cube did for the Sportage.

Inside, an elevated glass panel above the brushed chrome dash service as a display, into which information on battery charge and speed are projected. The front bench folds down to give access to a third passenger, who sits sideways in what’s otherwise the boot when the seat base is flipped up.

Two cameras positioned low under the usual wing mirror spot will perform their function, projecting images into the car

According to Schreyer, the electric car will go the route of the computer, with people increasing buying on innovative design rather than just on power figures.

The Pop was the halo car for a new range of EcoDynamics cars Kia displayed, including a 75bhp 1.4-litre diesel version of the Venga that emits 114g/km of CO2. On sale around November, it features stop and start to cut the engine in traffic and improve fuel economy.

Next to it on the stand were two more EcoDynamics cars, including a 94g/km Cee’d that uses a 90bhp version of the same 1.4 diesel. With the same start-stop system and improved underbody dymamics, it’s just a concept at the moment but will form the basis of a sub 100g/km car from next year.

Less certain of production is the low-emission mild-hybrid version of the Sportage that has its 1.7 litre diesel mated to a 5kw electric motor.

Kia showed a battery-only Venga concept at Geneva this year and is working on a pure battery car. For more details click here.

Paris Show 2010 Highlights: Jaguar C-X75 Concept

Jaguar has made waves on the eve of the Paris motor show with a surprise ultra-low emissions supercar that could catapult it back into the rarefied market it left in 1994, when the 217mph XJ220 ended production.

The C-X75 pictured here has been unveiled to the world’s media at the Paris show’s press day today. Jaguar officially describes it as “a commemoration of 75 years of Jaguar heritage, and a glimpse at the design cues and technology that will characterise our cars in the future.”

But internally, as Autocar can reveal, Jaguar considers the car almost wholly realistic for production and it has ambitions to bring it to the road, relaunching Jaguar as a powerful, forward-looking force in the supercar world.

“With the current XK, XF and XJ, we’ve refreshed and enhanced the public’s perception of the Jaguar brand,” explained deputy design director Julian Thomson. “The time’s right for us to push on again. To make people aware that we can make an even more exotic and special kind of car — a true supercar that’s sustainable and future-proof, and that also combines performance, luxury and beauty in a way that only a Jaguar can.”

What makes the C-X75 particularly remarkable is its experimental powertrain. Powering this 4.6m-long, 205mph, two-seat berlinetta are four 195bhp electric motors, one at each wheel. They give a combined 780bhp and 1180lb ft of torque, and provide for zero-emissions running, dynamics-enhancing torque vectoring, and pace that even an XJ220 couldn’t match: 0-62mph in 3.4sec, 0-100mph in 5.5sec and 0-186mph in a Veyron-beating 15.7sec.

Paris Show 2010 Highlights: 2011 Infiniti IPL G Convertible

Infiniti is turning up the heat. The Japanese firm showed this tuned version of its new G37 Cabrio at the Paris show. The car previews the Infiniti Performance Line kits which may launch in Europe next year, depending on how favourable the reaction is at the French show.

To set the IPL Inifiinti apart, the firm has boosted the 3.7-litre V6 from 316bhp to 333bhp thanks to a sports exhaust. The car has also been derestricted, and will now hit more than 168mph flat out.

Cosmetic changes include 19-inch alloys, lowered and stiffened suspension, a bootlid spoiler, new side sills, and a new paint finish called Malbec Black, which is a pearlescent black paint with red hints.

On the inside, the doors and dash get a special interior trim called KACHU which is inspired by samurai warrior armour.

The Infiniti Performance Line G Cabrio Concept follows the launch of the IPL in North America, which took place in August. For more details click here.

Paris Show 2010 Highlights: 2011 Hyundai ix20

Hyundai has revealed its new ix20 compact MPV at the Paris motor show.

The company claims it will offer class-leading value, CO2 emissions and economy.

The five-seater is Hyundai’s sister car to the Kia Venga, albeit with significantly overhauled front styling and changes to the rear and to its interior.

The front-end borrows much from the ix35 crossover, including its hexagonal grille and headlight designs.

The car will go on sale in the UK on 11 November and will start at less than £12,500. Although the ix20 won’t be the cheapest in its class, Hyundai claims it will be the best value, due to its generous standard equipment levels.

Air-con, stop-start, ESP and Bluetooth connectivity will all be standard, as will side and curtain airbags. Hyundai expects the car to get five stars in its Euro NCAP safety test.

UK buyers can choose from 89bhp 1.4-litre petrol and diesel engines. The diesel model will have CO2 emissions of 114g/km and fuel economy of 65mpg; both figures are class leading, Hyundai claims. A 125bhp 1.6-litre petrol auto-only model will also be offered.

There had been some doubt over what the ix20 would be called. Hyundai has decided the ‘x’ badge refers to niche models, not those with all-wheel drive. Models with four-wheel drive will end with 5, as is the case with the ix35.

All ix20s, except the entry-level model (pictured), will get the firm’s new ‘intelligent’ asymmetric eco grille, previewed on its i-flow concept. This grille improves both economy and emissions and its design carries over to the car’s interior.

Paris Show 2010 Highlights: 2011 Hyundai i10

Hyundai has revealed its facelifted i10 at the Paris motor show.

Like the new ix20 MPV that’s also been revealed, the revised i10 features styling cues at the front taken from the firm’s ix35 crossover. Changes include a design for the front headlights and a new hexagonal grille.

The interior has received a small upgrade, too, although the changes are not as extensive as those to the exterior.

The most significant under-the-skin change is the addition of a new 68bhp, 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine with sub-100g/km CO2 emissions. Hyundai claims it will be the cheapest 99g/km car on sale in the UK.

An 86bhp 1.2-litre petrol unit is also offered, while the 1.1 petrol engine has been dropped from the range.

The new i10 range goes on sale in the UK on 2 January.
